LUZ Collection was born from wanderlust and curiosity.

LUZ was founded in 2015 by Chantale De Breceda, who went from a career in fine arts into retail when she opened a small bookshop and gallery in Joshua Tree, California in 2009. De Breceda presented her last exhibition of drawings in Japan that same year. The drawings in that exhibition were created while she traveled throughout the US and Canada in a vegetable oil powered Volkswagen van during most of 2006 and 2007.

Eventually, her retail adventure led to having a store in Los Angeles called YES and she began importing textiles from Mexico to sell there. After YES closed at the end of 2017 De Breceda turned importing into a full time job. She works directly with indigenous artists in various regions of Mexico to bring her own designs to life and to source traditional designs.

De Breceda is the daughter of an indigenous textile artist, from whom she learned vast amounts about different techniques and qualities of fiber arts.

The LUZ catalogue reflects a commitment to work with artists using natural materials that can be collected, grown and harvested on their traditional lands and made using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations.

De Breceda is a member of the Métis Nation of British Columbia and a descendant of the Cowessess First Nation of Saskatchewan. She brings her perspective as an indigenous person to her business practices and is guided by the principles of respect, reciprocity, relevance and responsibility in her work ethic.

Although LUZ Collection is not certified free trade, we make every effort to work using fair trade guidelines.
